Why Summer Is Hard on Computers
Computer components — CPUs, GPUs, hard drives — all generate heat when they operate. Under normal conditions, your computer's cooling system (fans, heatsinks, thermal paste) dissipates that heat efficiently. But cooling systems work by moving heat into the surrounding air. When that surrounding air is already 35°C or hotter, they have much less headroom to work with.
The result: components run hotter than they should. Modern processors will throttle themselves — slowing down — to avoid damage. At extreme temperatures, they'll shut the system off entirely. Prolonged exposure to excessive heat accelerates component degradation and shortens the life of your machine. Hard drives in particular are very sensitive to sustained high temperatures.
The good news is that most summer heat problems are preventable with a little preparation before the hot weather arrives.
1. Clean Your Fans and Vents
Dust is the enemy of cooling. Over months and years, dust accumulates inside computers — building up on fan blades, clogging heatsink fins, and coating intake vents. Even a thin layer of dust acts as insulation, trapping heat inside the case.
Before summer hits, give your computer a clean. For desktop PCs, shut it down, open the side panel, and use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust — paying particular attention to the CPU heatsink, GPU fan, power supply fan, and any case intake or exhaust vents. Do this outdoors or in a well-ventilated area, because you'll shift a surprising amount of dust.
For laptops, the process is the same but through the vents. Compressed air through the exhaust vent (usually on the side or back) will clear the dust from the internal heatsink. If your laptop is significantly older and hasn't been cleaned, you may need to open it up — or have us do it — to properly clean the cooling assembly.
This single step can drop temperatures by 10–15°C in a dusty machine. It's free, it takes ten minutes, and it makes a dramatic difference.
2. Check Your Thermal Paste
Thermal paste (also called thermal compound) sits between your CPU and its heatsink, filling microscopic air gaps to improve heat transfer. It's highly effective when fresh — but it dries out and degrades over time, losing its thermal conductivity.
On a 3–5 year old machine that's never had thermal paste replaced, dried paste is often a significant contributor to high temperatures. A reapplication of quality thermal paste — after removing the old paste and cleaning both surfaces — can reduce CPU temperatures by 10–20°C.
This is a job that requires removing the CPU cooler, which is straightforward on desktops and requires more care on laptops. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, bring it in to us — it's a quick, affordable job and well worth it on an older machine heading into summer.
3. Keep It Out of Direct Sunlight
This sounds obvious but it's overlooked surprisingly often. Direct sunlight on a computer case dramatically raises its ambient temperature before the machine even starts working. A desktop tower sitting in a sunny spot can easily absorb enough radiant heat to add 5–10°C to its starting temperature.
Relocate your computer to a shaded spot if possible. Keep it away from windows that get direct afternoon sun. If you use a laptop at a desk near a window, consider a simple blind or curtain to reduce direct sun exposure during the hottest part of the day.
Also make sure the computer's vents have adequate clearance. Desktop towers need space around the intake and exhaust. Laptops should never be used flat on a soft surface like a bed or couch — doing so blocks the underside vents entirely and temperatures can spike very quickly.
4. Monitor Your Temperatures
You can't manage what you don't measure. Before and during summer, it's worth keeping an eye on how hot your components are actually running — so you catch a problem developing rather than waiting for a crash or shutdown.
HWMonitor (by CPUID) is a free Windows utility that shows real-time temperatures for your CPU, GPU, hard drives, and motherboard. Download it, run it, and check the readings when your computer is under moderate load. For most CPUs, anything under 80°C under load is fine. Sustained temps above 90°C are cause for concern. Hard drives should ideally stay under 45°C.
CrystalDiskInfo is another free tool specifically for monitoring hard drive and SSD health — it'll warn you if a drive is running too hot or showing signs of failure.
If your temperatures look high even before summer starts, that's a clear signal to clean the fans and check the thermal paste before the ambient temperature climbs further.
5. Consider an SSD Upgrade
If your computer still has a spinning hard drive (HDD) rather than a solid-state drive (SSD), summer is a great time to make the switch — for more than one reason.
SSDs run significantly cooler than HDDs. A spinning hard drive generates heat from its motor and moving platters. An SSD has no moving parts, uses less power, and runs far cooler. In a machine that already runs warm, swapping the HDD for an SSD reduces both heat and the risk of heat-related drive failure.
There's also the performance benefit — SSDs are dramatically faster for everything: boot times, opening applications, loading files. If your computer still has an HDD, upgrading to an SSD is the single most impactful improvement you can make.

6. Think About Airflow
For desktop PCs, airflow inside the case matters. If your case fans are pushing air in but not effectively out, hot air pools inside. Ideally you want a clear front-to-back or bottom-to-top airflow path: cool air in through the front or bottom, hot air out through the back or top.
Check that the cables inside your desktop aren't blocking airflow paths — in older machines, cable clutter can seriously impede air movement. A simple cable tidy can make a measurable temperature difference.
For laptops on desks, a laptop cooling pad (an elevated stand with fans underneath) can help during extended hot-weather use sessions. They're inexpensive and can keep temperatures noticeably lower during summer.
7. When to See a Professional
Some summer heat problems need more than a can of compressed air. If your computer is:
- Shutting down unexpectedly, particularly during warm weather or under load
- Throttling (running noticeably slower than usual, especially in summer)
- Making unusual noises — grinding or rattling fans are often about to fail
- Running hot even after cleaning and re-pasting
— it's time to bring it in. A failing fan on a laptop or desktop can take a machine from "running warm" to "catastrophic overheating" very quickly. We can replace fans, reclean and repaste, check for underlying faults, and make sure your machine is ready for whatever the summer throws at it.
