Water Damaged Dell XPS — Back From the Dead

What Happened
A customer from Midland brought in their Dell XPS 15 after spilling a full mug of coffee directly onto the keyboard. The machine shut off immediately and wouldn't turn on again. They had 4 years of family photos, tax documents, and work files saved locally — no recent backup.
What We Found
After carefully disassembling the unit, we found coffee had tracked along the keyboard ribbon cable and reached the motherboard. There was visible corrosion on several contacts near the power delivery circuit. The keyboard was beyond saving — keys were sticky and several had stopped registering entirely.
The good news: the SSD was protected by its enclosure and showed no signs of damage. Data was intact.
What We Did
- Removed and secured the SSD immediately — data safety first
- Cleaned the motherboard with isopropyl alcohol and precision tools
- Inspected all connectors and reseated affected components
- Sourced and installed a replacement Dell XPS 15 keyboard (same model)
- Ran full POST and stress tests to confirm stability
- Verified all 4 years of files were fully accessible
